What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a method of exfoliation (removing dead skin cells) using one of the most advance abrasion technologies available. Unlike a standard dermabrasion treatment which uses a mechanical brush or wheel to remove several layers of skin, microdermabrasion treats only the top layers where most damage to your skin is contained. The difference between the two is the intensity and thoroughness of eliminating the top layer skin cells.

The device immediately agitates and removes the outermost layer of skin by spraying your skin with micro-crystals and immediately vacuuming away the dead and damaged cells. What remains is your healthy base skin layer. The body will then perform its natural functions promoting new skin cell growth on the surface and increase collagen production to reduce the appearance of blemishes, wrinkles (fine lines and crow’s feet), black-heads, and acne scars.

What is the procedure like?

The procedure is safe, comfortable and quick (often performed between twenty to thirty minutes). The skin is initially prepped by removing any makeup and neutralizing the skin. If this is your first time the specialist will test the strength of the nozzle on an inconspicuous portion of the body. Your first procedure the intensity of the crystals will be lower than normal. Upon further visits the intensity will increase to acclimate your skin to the procedure. There is no pain, just a mild tingling (like a subtle vibrating sensation) from the spray and vacuum. The treated skin may be slightly more sensitive, so a lotion will be applied to minimize irritation. The benefits are often seen immediately with an improved skin tone and a much smoother, vibrant look. The treatment can be performed on any area of the body; often including the neck, arms, and back.

Who should have the procedure?

Whether you are young with acne/clogged pores/discolored skin or older trying to counteract years of sun damage/minor wrinkles microdermabrasion is one the most safe and effective methods available. It is a very non-invasive procedure and can be performed at max once a week. For those with minor skin imperfections such as fine wrinkles and lines, clogged pores, acne scars, or uneven pigmentation microdermabrasion is highly recommended. Those with very sensitive skin or skin pigmentation problems are prime candidates given the relatively mild damage experienced. Unfortunately if you have skin lesions, diabetes, or any other skin diseases it is not recommended. Please consult your microdermabrasion professional to determine your candidacy for the procedure.

Best Results

Multiple treatments are recommended at two week intervals in order to achieve the best results. Regular application of topical creams will help your skin pigmentation remain balanced and looking smooth. Because the skin top layer is removed regular application of sunscreen is highly recommended in order not to damage your base skin layers. Remember microdermabrasion is focused on allowing your body to naturally grow the outermost layers with fresh healthy skin. To do so you must continue to follow the direction of your dermatologist. Remember your skin will be sensitive post treatment and it is best you test a product before making a purchase to avoid inflammation.

History of Microdermabrasion

Originally the method to use crystals to exfoliate and remove the top layer of dead skin was developed by dermatologists in Italy to serve as a less invasive, safer dermabrasion procedure. Understanding that the majority of skin imperfections could be addressed with a less abrasive method American skin care facilities in the 90s began adopting microdermabrasion as the skin rejuvenation procedure of choice.

PMD (Personal Microdermabrasion) vs. Microdermabrasion Sessions

Improper effectiveness and risk of over exposure are two of the most prevalent problems when not performed by a dermatologist. While many positive results can be achieved the disks or crystals may not be properly catered to your skin type resulting in burn marks on your skin. There are several steps involved in a proper microdermabrasion and a professional dermatologist will be able to expertly apply the proper lotions and the professional equipment is used. If you do use a PMD ensure you inform your dermatologist to not overlap a professional session too close to a PMD session.

Customer Testimonials

This is one of the best investments I have made. I have noticeable results. My family and friends instantly noticed the acne scarring disappearing after a few sessions. I would say that nearly 75% of my scarring has disappeared. The procedure was quick and painless. I didn’t have to be concerned with going out immediately after the treatment.

-Kim S. (Dallas, TX)

"My skin no longer has that bumby texture. I feel comfortable rolling out of bed without any makeup on to go to the store and not be concerned with my appearance! My skin is so important to me and has increased my confidence. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for an easy way to achieve what months of over the counter topical cream treatments couldn’t achieve.”

-Nadia A. (Atlanta, GA)
